Fourth graders are expected to write at least a three paragraph essays that answer a prompt. They are given a passage(s) and a prompt. They are expected to answer the prompt completely using evidence from the passage to support their answer.

There are three types of writing that fourth graders learn: opinion, informative/explanatory, and narrative.

Each essay must include the following:

  • an introduction

    • hooks the reader

    • background information about the topic

    • focus statement (topic sentence that tells what the essay will be about)

    • Lists the 2-3 reasons (no evidence from the text)

  • a body paragraph

    • 2-3 pieces of evidence from the passage

    • explanations of how the evidence support your answer

  • a conclusion

    • sums up the entire essay

  • Transition words and phrases (accountable talk)

  • Must remain on topic.
